Thursday Ratings: ‘Scandal’ & ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Rise, NCAA March Madness Game Declines

With CBS’s regularly scheduled programming on hiatus in favor of the network’s coverage of the ongoing NCAA Championship tournament, ABC (6.80 million viewers, 2.0 adults 18-49 rating) snagged a first place victory on Thursday night in the young adults demographic. FOX (6.83 million, 1.8 A18-49), however, had an extra 30,000 viewers than the Alphabet. CBS (3.75 million, 1.1 A18-49) tied NBC (3.47 million, 1.1 A18-49) in the key advertiser-friendly demo, but had a slight advantage with total viewers. The CW (1.94 million, 0.9 A18-49) was in last place.

ABC opened primetime with low-rated “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (3.50 million, 0.8 A18-49), which was the lowest-rated program in its timeslot. The network rebounded from 9:00-11:00PM with its one-two punch of “Grey’s Anatomy” (7.97 million, 2.4 A18-49) and “Scandal” (8.92 million, 2.9 A18-49), both of which increased an average of six percent in the demo from their week-ago episodes.

Week two of “Hell’s Kitchen” (5.30 million, 1.7 A18-49) slid over 10 percent in the demo from its premiere last week, but remains a significant improvement over “Rake.” Veteran singing competition series “American Idol” (8.37 million, 1.9 A18-49) retained its audience from last Thursday.

CBS’s three-hours of March Madness coverage kicked off with an over-run of the Michigan Wolverines vs Wofford Terriers match-up from 8:00-8:30PM (4.36 million, 1.2 A18-49). Compared to the year-ago South Dakota State vs Michigan contest on Mar. 21, 2013, this year’s bout declined 37 percent. From 8:30-11:00PM, the Eye network telecast the Arizona State Sun Devils vs Texas Longhorns game from Milwaukee (3.63 million, 1.1 A18-49), which was even with last year’s Akron Zips vs Virginia Commonwealth Rams contest.

With CBS’s sitcoms absent in the 8:00-9:00PM hour, NBC’s “Community” (3.46 million, 1.1 A18-49) and “Parks & Recreation” (4.49 million, 1.2 A18-49) increased an average 10 percent. “Hollywood Game Night” (2.95 million, 0.9 A18-49) slipped one-tenth of a demo point from last week, but “Parenthood” (4.18 million, 1.2 A18-49) remained consistent.

Over on the CW, “The Vampire Diaries” (2.24 million, 1.0 A18-49) replicated its rating from two weeks ago, and “Reign” (1.64 million, 0.7 A18-49) ticked up slightly from last week with a new episode of “Vampire Diaries” as its lead-in.
