‘NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt’ to Tour Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory Tonight

“NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” will debut an exclusive look inside X, Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory, during the broadcast on Wednesday, April 27. Last week, anchor Lester Holt visited Google’s parent company Alphabet and took TV cameras inside of X for the first-time ever, speaking with Astro Teller, Chief of Moonshots, and Obi Felten, Director of X Foundry.

Holt spoke with the X team about the following projects and how they are using robotics to address these issues:

– Self-Driving Car – automobile prototypes that operate at the push of a button.
– Project Loon – a network of balloons designed to bring internet service to remote areas.
– Makani – a project developing new wind turbines.
– Project Wing – automated aircrafts designed for delivery services.

A portion of Holt’s interview with Teller is excerpted below.

Lester Holt: So you were explaining to me: robotics, we think of a technology, a robot. But you’re really looking at the application of the robot.

Astro Teller: Our self-driving cars are robots. Our airborne wind turbines are robots. Our stratospheric balloons for bringing internet to people around the world, they’re actually robots. Our self-flying vehicles for package delivery are robots. So you’re asking what we would do with robots in the future? I want to find problems to solve in the world. We all, at X, want to find problems we can solve in the world. And then, if we can use some of the tools and techniques from robotics to solve those problems, fantastic. But we’re not going to work on robots for their own sake. We’re going to work on solving problems.
