‘Glee’ Episode Guide (April 29): Blaine Befriends Rich Socialite; Mercedes Helps Santana Snag Record Deal

“Back-Up Plan” (04/29/14) – Rachel jeopardizes her “Funny Girl” lead when she auditions for a television pilot. Meanwhile, Mercedes (guest star Amber Riley) tries to help get Santana in on her recording deal, and Blaine befriends an older, rich socialite (guest star Shirley MacLaine) in an all-new episode of “Glee” airing Tuesday, April 29 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Entering its fifth season, “Glee” is a musical comedy about a group of ambitious and talented kids who escape the harsh realities of high school by joining a “Glee” club, where they find strength, acceptance and, ultimately, their voice. Last year’s graduates and aspiring singers, RACHEL BERRY (Lea Michelle) and KURT HUMMEL (Chris Colfer), packed their bags for New York and enrolled at a prestigious performing arts school, NYADA, where they made new friends and learned the cruel realities of college. These naïve freshmen moved into a Brooklyn loft, signed up for internships, auditioned for Broadway shows and gained a roommate when SANTANA LOPEZ (Naya Rivera) moved to the Big Apple.

The series will pick up where it left off last season and continue to follow the journey of the NYADA students and the kids of New Directions. The school year will continue at McKinley High, where the “Glee” club’s win at Regionals puts them on the path to possible back-to-back wins at Nationals. Meanwhile, in New York, we find out if Rachel lands the lead role in her first Broadway production and what Blaine plans for his proposal to Kurt. The season’s first two episodes will feature songs of the Beatles. A tribute to Cory Monteith’s character, FINN HUDSON, will follow.

Since its debut, “Glee” has become a bona fide cultural phenomenon, received prestigious honors, including a Golden Globe Award and a Peabody Award, and singlehandedly made “Glee” clubs cool again. The series boasts critical acclaim, a die-hard fan base, two Grammy Award nominations, two platinum and five gold albums, more than 43 million songs and more than 13 million albums sold worldwide, two sold-out concert tours, a 3-D movie and four Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes, including the award for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical.

For the past four seasons, the “Glee” club’s curly-haired leader has been WILL SCHUESTER (Matthew Morrison), a talented young teacher whose main objective is to take the club to Nationals. Last season he finally married his sweetheart and colleague, EMMA PILLSBURY (Jayma Mays), in an impromptu ceremony in the choir room with the “Glee” club kids in attendance. New Directions’ aspiring stars include the new female lead vocalist MARLEY ROSE (Melissa Benoist); Puck’s bad-boy younger half-brother, JAKE PUCKERMAN (Jacob Artist); resident bad girl Cheerio! KITTY WILDE (Becca Tobin); and dyslexic football player RYDER LYNN (Blake Jenner), who got “catfished” by transgender student WADE “UNIQUE” ADAMS (Alex Newell). Rounding out the “Glee” club is heartthrob BLAINE ANDERSON (Darren Criss); the trouty-mouth with a knack for celebrity mimicry SAM EVANS (Chord Overstreet); ARTIE ABRAMS (Kevin McHale), a performer with tons of street cred who isn’t held back by his wheelchair; and TINA COHEN-CHANG (Jenna Ushkowitz), a strong and opinionated goth chick.

Mr. Schuester’s heart is in the right place and he is determined to help the kids in all aspects of life, but at every turn he must battle with his nemesis, SUE SYLVESTER (Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Lynch), the conniving cheerleading coach with a newborn baby girl.

Last season, the series reached its milestone 500th performance with a rendition of the anthem, “Shout.” “Glee” music continues to shatter records with more than 53 million “Glee” tracks digitally downloaded. Also, the “Glee” cast holds the record for most singles to ever enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart (203 tracks to date), surpassing records previously held by Elvis Presley, the Beatles and James Brown.

“Glee” has attracted A-list guest stars, from Gwyneth Paltrow to Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker. This season, Demi Lovato (THE X FACTOR) guest-stars as “Dani,” a New York-based struggling artist and friend of Rachel and Santana’s.

“Glee” is produced by Ryan Murphy Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television. Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan are co-creators of the series. Murphy, Falchuk, Brennan and Dante Di Loreto serve as executive producers.
